The Food and Drug Administration has approved esomeprazole (Nexium) for short-term treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease in children ages 1 through 11. The drug is approved in two forms (liquid and delayed-release capsules) at a dosage of 10 to 20 mg daily. For children ages 12 to 17, the approved dosage is 20 to 40 mg daily. In studies, the most common adverse reactions were headache, abdominal pain, nausea, gas, constipation, dry mouth, and sleepiness. Safety and efficacy haven't been established in children younger than age 1. |
