NEW WARNING
Sanofi-Aventis has issued a "Dear Healthcare Professional" letter to further clarify changes that were made to the prescribing information for their antibiotic telithromycin (Ketek). In March 2007, the use of the drug became limited to only treating community acquired pneumonia in patients ages 18 years and older; all other indications have been removed. A new black box warning has been added to the prescribing information following reports of fatal and life-threatening respiratory failure in patients with myasthenia gravis who used telithromycin. Sanofi-Aventis reports concern about published data stating that the drug is still being used for the no-longer-approved indications and encourages all healthcare professionals to consider patient safety.
