NEW WARNING
GlaxoSmithKline issued a Dear Health Care Provider letter to bring attention to the increased incidence of fractures in women who receive long-term treatment for type 2 diabetes with rosiglitazone-containing products, such as rosiglitazone maleate (Avandia), rosiglitazone maleate and metformin hydrochloride (Avandamet), and rosiglitazone maleate and glimepiride (Avandaryl). The company reports the findings of the ADOPT (A Diabetes Outcome and Progression Trial) study that compared rosiglitazone to metformin and glyburide for glycemic control. The study showed an increased incidence of bone fractures (most common in the arm, hand, and foot) in patients using drugs containing rosiglitazone. No causal relationship has been found, but it's advised that the risk of fracture be considered when prescribing rosiglitazone-containing products. Measures should be taken to maintain bone health in these patients and all type 2 diabetics.
