NEW WARNING
Genentech issued a Dear Health Care Provider letter about new safety information related to the monoclonal antibody ranibizumab (Lucentis), indicated for wet age-related macular degeneration. Postmarketing studies showed a higher incidence of stroke in patients treated with the higher 0.5-mg dose than in those receiving the 0.3-mg dose. Patients with a history of stroke were at higher risk. Genentech states that this incidence is within the safety guidelines for the drug but encourages providers to be aware of this possibility and to report any adverse events to MedWatch or directly to Genentech.
