NEW WARNING
Takeda has issued a “Dear Healthcare Provider” letter to bring attention to new safety information regarding products containing their antidiabetic pioglitazone. These products include Actos, ACTOplus met (pioglitazone with metformin), and Duetact (pioglitazone with glimepiride). Postmarketing studies have shown an increase in fractures in women receiving long-term treatment. The majority of the fractures that occurred involved the forearm, hand, wrist, foot, ankle, or leg. No causal relationship has been established. Takeda advises that the risk of fracture be considered when caring for patients with type 2 diabetes who are receiving pioglitazone or when treatment with the drug is being considered.
