NEW WARNING
Pfizer issued a “Dear Healthcare Provider” letter to announce that they’re no longer going to manufacture inhaled insulin (Exubera). They cite lack of sales, not any safety issues as the reason for their decision to discontinue the drug. Since no other inhaled insulin is currently available, they provided a chart for switching patients taking Exubera to long-acting insulin. Exubera is supplied in mg dose units and long-acting insulin will need to be ordered in units. All patients using the drug will receive a “Dear Patient” letter that will explain the discontinuation and encourage them to see their health care provider to discuss treatment options. Pfizer will make the drug available to patients for the next three months to facilitate the switch to another form of therapy.
