NEW WARNING
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requiring manufacturers of the immunosuppressant drugs sirolimus (Rapamune), cyclosporine (Sandimmune), cyclosporine modified (Neoral), mycophenolate mofetil (CellCept), mycophenolic acid (Myfortic), and their generics to update labeling information to warn of the increased risk of opportunistic infection in immunosuppressed patients. After analyzing its Adverse Event Reporting System, the FDA noted an increased risk of the activation of latent viral infections, including BK virus–associated nephropathy, which is primarily seen in renal transplant patients. BK virus–associated nephropathy can lead to renal allograft loss. Health care providers should monitor patients closely and adjust therapy immediately if BK virus–associated nephropathy develops. Immunosuppressant drugs are indicated to protect against rejection after organ transplantation.
