NEW WARNING
The Food & Drug Administration issued a warning related to healthcare professionals about the possibility of delayed-onset, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), a serious antigen–antibody reaction resulting from irreversible aggregation of platelets. This may progress to heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and thromboses (HITT) with venous and arterial thromboses and resultant myocardial infarction, stroke, or peripheral emboli. Studies have shown that the thrombotic events may be the first sign of this condition and may occur up to several weeks after the heparin therapy has been stopped. It’s suggested that any patient who develops thrombocytopenia or thrombosis after heparin therapy be evaluated for HIT and HITT.
