NEW WARNING
The Food and Drug Administration has issued a Public Health Advisory regarding the safe use of the asthma drugs tiotropium (Spiriva) and formoterol (Foradil). These drugs are provided as capsules that are intended for specific inhalation devices, which help to deliver the drug directly into the lungs. The National Poison Control Center has received many reports of patients swallowing the capsules instead of using them in the inhalation device. Though no serious adverse effects have been reported, the patients are not getting the needed benefits of the drug. The warning includes patient guidelines to use the capsules in their inhaler as designed and not to swallow the capsules. Health care providers are urged to include detailed teaching about the proper administering of these drugs for the patients, and the manufacturers are working on improving labeling and education components for patients.
