NEW WARNING
Amgen and Wyeth have issued a "Dear Healthcare Professional" letter to announce the addition of a new Black Box Warning to their antarthritic drug, etanercept. The Black Box Warning stresses the high risk for infection, including bacterial sepsis and tuberculosis in patients taking the drug. They encourage pre-treatment screening for tuberculosis and patient education regarding the signs and symptoms of infection that they should report so immediate treatment can be given if an infection does occur. The new prescribing information for the drug will have a Medication Guide for patients, which stresses safety issues and signs and symptoms to report immediately. Health care professionals are urged to discuss safety issues with their patients to help them prevent serious infections.
