NEW WARNING
Wyeth issued a Dear Health Care Professional letter to alert providers about published reports citing a decrease in the incidence of breast cancer, particularly in women older than age 50. The authors of the study correlate this effect to a reduction in the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but an actual causal relationship hasn't been established.
Wyeth supports the use of HRT in appropriate patients to decrease unpleasant signs and symptoms of menopause and for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis. They encourage the use of the smallest possible dose, for the shortest period of time. They included a listing of known risks including endometrial cancer, cardiovascular disease, and dementia.
