NEW WARNING
Bristol-Myers Squibb has issued a “Dear Health Care Provider” letter to bring attention to a case report about their antiviral for chronic hepatitis B, entecavir (Baraclude). Entecavir is recommended for hepatitis B infection in patients co-infected with HIV who don’t qualify for highly active antiretroviral therapy. In a recent case report, a patient in this category developed a resistant strain of HIV. Bristol-Myers Squibb is now recommending cautious use of Baraclude in patients who have HIV but aren’t receiving effective HIV treatment. The package insert for Baraclude will now state that the drug hasn’t been evaluated in patients with HIV who aren’t receiving effective anti-HIV treatment and that caution should be used in these patients.
