NEW WARNING
Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc. has issued a "Dear Colleague" letter regarding new safety information related to their antibiotic daptomycin (CUBICIN). Reports of significant impurities in the drug when stored in ReadyMed elastomeric infusion pumps have prompted the company to recommend against using CUBICIN in ReadyMed infusion pumps until a causal link can be found. ReadyMed pumps are made by Cardinal Health, Inc. In laboratory investigations, mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) was found in the product when using the ReadyMed pumps. It was not found in CUBICIN stored in Eclipse infusion pumps. MBT has been associated with the occurrence of certain tumors. Further studies are needed to evaluate the source and relationship of the MBT in the samples tested. While further studies are being conducted, they recommend that a different infusion system be used with CUBICIN.
