Using a vascular access port

Vascular access ports (VAPs) are implanted in patients who need intermittent I.V. therapy for 3 months or more. VAPs reduce the risk of infection because they aren't exposed to the external environment. To access a VAP, insert a noncoring needle through the subcutaneous tissue and into the port. Then secure the VAP access needle before starting I.V. administration.
