Geriatric patients commonly experience adverse drug reactions. If the adverse reaction is misinterpreted as a new medical condition, a new drug may be prescribed to treat the new "condition." For example, if high-dose therapy with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug increases the blood pressure in a hypertensive patient, this adverse reaction might be treated by changing the patient’s antihypertensive agent or increasing its dosage. To avoid such overmedication, review the geriatric patient’s use of prescription and over-the-counter drugs and consider their effects on blood pressure. |
