Inhalation anesthetics must be used carefully in geriatric patients. An elderly patient may present with multiple coexisting conditions that affect his overall health. For example, a debilitated surgical patient may be predisposed to an exaggerated response to medications, and even smaller-than-normal drug dosages may result in hypotension, prolonged respiratory depression, and longer recovery. Confusion, agitation, and memory loss may also accompany a prolonged recovery from an anesthetic agent and may be mistaken for signs of dementia. |
